Delhi High Court seeks ED’s stand in AAP leader Sanjay Singh’s bail plea in excise policy case

The Delhi High Court on Monday sought the Enforcement Directorate (ED)’s stand in AAP leader Sanjay Singh’s bail plea in a money laundering case probed by the central agency in connection with the now-scrapped excise policy.

A single judge bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued notice to the ED and listed the matter for hearing on January 29.

Appearing for Singh, Senior Advocate Mohit Mathur submitted that his client had been in custody since October 4, 2023. Mathur said Singh has “no role even in the predicate offence” and was arrested after “their star witness” Dinesh Arora made a statement “having changed his statement several times”.

Singh was arrested in October last year following 10 hours of searches at his North Avenue home. He was the third Aam Aadmi Party leader to be arrested in the case, after former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and the party’s communications in-charge, Vijay Nair.

While arresting Singh, the ED had alleged that he had ensured changes were made in the liquor policy through Sisodia to favour certain businessmen.

Justice Nagpal had said, “…this court is of prima facie view that the case against (the) applicant is genuine and the said evidence and material shows (the) involvement of (the) applicant in the commission of the alleged offence of money laundering because he is shown to have been, directly or indirectly, involved in the process or activities connected with proceeds of crime.”
